A CANteen for all GEORGE CHAYTOR ENGLISH COLLEGE, TEMUCO, CHILEHistory
LEARNING GOAL & PURPOSE
Chile has introduced to us an exceptional story about a group of truly insightful kids from George Chaytor English College, Temuco, who can tell the difference between equity and equality. Their discerning approach to differentiate fair from unfair is so aspirational.
These super-awesome kids had the courage to identify and correct a situation at school that favored the older group of students over the younger ones. So, to create a fair environment for all students, they used their leadership skills and took measures to ensure sustainable equity for all kids at school.
Hook: Ask the students to imagine 3 scenarios about 2 kids who went to watch a baseball game from behind a fence. Illustrate if required.
1st scenario: The two students are given the same size box to stand on even though both of them are of different heights. Because of this, only the taller one is able to watch the match from over the fence after using the box.
2nd scenario: The shorter student only gets a booster box on top of his box, to give him that extra height needed for him to see the baseball game from over the fence.
3rd scenario: The taller student gets a booster box on top his box even though he does not need it and the shorter one does not get it even though he is unable to see the game without the booster box.
Ask the students about which one out of the three do they think is the fairest scenario for both kids. Explain them about the concept of equality (1st scenario), equity (2nd scenario) and reality (3rd scenario).

Activity: Share your ideas!
Students can write an extended essay about equality and equity and share some examples.
Share the story of freedom fighters / Rosa Park and how she advanced the cause of human rights, equality, and the common good by refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person, an act that led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Students can do a group study on different activists and present in class /school assembly.
Closing the loop:
Emphasize the idea that: Identifying what every individual or group needs and providing them with those opportunities is more relevant sometimes than just treating everyone the same. Thinking through the fairer strategy out of Equity and Equality can be tough as it is very circumstantial. Nevertheless, it is always crucial to stand up for what is fair for all and create spaces where everyone is treated just.
